Hey Question. Now that you’ve made all your new years resolutions and your ins / outs, we’ve got a burning question….how in the world do you do it all? There’s only a limited amount of time in a day so we’re trying to piece together — waking up early, having some quiet reflection, working out, then working, then cooking a healthy meal, cleaning the kitchen and getting to bed on time, while managing every errand under the sun, oh and family, networking, friends, the list goes on. Someone please tell us the secret.

In other news…part of the internet is dead, LinkedIn is a dating app, and more people fight over Paramount.

RIP the millennial internet

The 2010s internet is dead

The Future. The internet is undergoing a massive transformation. And if this generational shift proves anything, it may be that the internet is inherently destabilizing and building a business model around the latest web iteration could mean that its success will be ephemeral.

Video killed the text star
Wired writer Jason Parham argues that the millennial internet exhaled its final breath when the news media sector lost more jobs in 2023 than it did across 2022 and 2021 combined.

  • In April, BuzzFeed News closed shop.

  • Jezebel was forced to shutter, only to be rescued from an early demise when Paste acquired the feminist site in late November.

Nothing lasts forever
Perhaps the final nail in the coffin has been social media’s metamorphosis from platforms of creativity to those of sponsored content.

  • Tumblr, which empowered voices that might have otherwise gone unheard, will no longer allow creators to make paywalled content starting this month.

  • Twitter (now X) has become infested with misinformation under Elon Musk’s ownership, prompting an exodus of users (and ad dollars) from the platform.

The internet will always be in a state of flux fun and fickle all at once.

LinkedIn is the new dating app

The Future. Using LinkedIn to look for dates has become more widespread in the WFH era. Even though LinkedIn’s community policies page forbids this practice, it might be safe to say that any platform with a direct-messaging option will likely also be used for dating.

Sliding into those DMs
Business Insider examines why some people are hijacking LinkedIn for love.

  • LinkedIn has also become a tool for vetting romantic candidates found through conventional dating apps and in-person encounters.

  • Those who miss the workplace camaraderie, either diminished or lost through remote and hybrid work, hope to recreate the water-cooler experience online.

Mixing business with pleasure
While the internet has blurred the lines between people’s professional and personal lives for years, those who cross LinkedIn’s boundaries might jeopardize their professional relationships and reputations. Just like flirting at the office, it could lead to sparks — or unemployment.

So, now we want to hear from you…

YOUR DAILY POLL

Do you use LinkedIn for dating?

58.9% of you voted Yes in yesterday’s poll: Have you kept up a noteworthy activity streak?

“235-day streak on the meditation app Chopra.”

“Yes, I committed to doing push-ups every single day starting in July 2023. I started at 10/day. Now I’m up to 80 with the goal of getting to 100 by the end of Q1 2024.”

“I have a 13-year streak of running at least 1,000 miles every year since 2010.”

“Bike commuting now going on 17 years straight without a single car commute!”

“First thing I do each morning is send a snap to my two best friends on Snapchat.”

“Kindle app says I have a 280-week streak of reading my Kindle. Nerd flex alert.”

“170 days of learning Greek on Duolingo! But my company is based there, so I have an extra reason to care.”

“My current streak is waking up every morning. 77 going on 78 years.”

“Sometimes life happens, and you miss a day. Then 200+ days of yoga or language-learning or whatever just disappears. I’ve lost a lot of progress on things I really wanted to try because of one bad day.”

“No, because I know it’s a way to keep me on my phone/on their app, and since I’ve deconstructed my perfectionism, I see this tactic as manipulative.”

BUSINESS

Many want keys to the kingdom

Titans vie for Paramount’s prize

The Future. Ever since Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced a possible merger with Paramount studios last month, Paramount’s fate has been in flux. But WBD has major competition for the company — and the winner could seriously alter the American media landscape.

So many suitors
National Amusements has several interested buyers for their subsidiary, Paramount.

  • WBD CEO David Zaslav suggested the WBD-Paramount merger back in December — possibly to absorb CBS and shore up WBD’s sports offerings.

  • Skydance Media founder David Ellison and Redbird Capital founder Larry Cardinale want Paramount, presumably to split its assets between them to boost their own studios and portfolios.

  • Comcast CEO Brian Roberts has long wanted to absorb WBD into NBCUniversal — and might still do it if WBD acquires Paramount.

Anyone’s game
WBD can’t acquire Paramount until April for tax reasons but is safe from antitrust legislation because they don’t already own a studio. But their competitors all have enough cash to buy Paramount, so it’s too soon to tell who National Amusements will pick.

It’s good competition. Perhaps they should televise it.
