1X Technologies Rolls Out Humanoid Robots For Homes

1X Technologies has made its home-focused humanoid robot, Neo, available for pre-order, with the first shipments going out next year.

Why It Hits: Humanoids are shaping up to be big business. Companies like 1X, Tesla, Agility, and Figure are racing to dominate what Morgan Stanley estimates could be a $5 trillion market by 2050. And while most of those bots will be destined for factory floors, 1X wants to land in your living room — positioning itself as the maker of a real-life Rosey the Robot from The Jetsons.

Behind The Code: For $20,000 (or $499/month), the 5’6”, 66-pound Neo can do — or at least “attempt,” per The WSJ’s Joanna Stern — all the chores you hate.

  • The robot is designed to do simple household tasks mostly autonomously, including folding laundry, putting away dishes, and turning lights on and off. It won’t be able to handle anything hot, heavy, or sharp at first… for obvious reasons.

  • When it can’t complete a task, owners can request a human 1X operator to pilot the robot through it. Users can also schedule operators to take over during specific windows to handle more complex chores.

  • Neo’s custom motor system and onboard AI let it lift up to 154 pounds and carry up to 50 — making it a helpful hand for moving furniture or hauling in groceries.

  • Available in three colors, the robot is intentionally designed to be genderless and “non-sexualized” (again, for obvious reasons). But it will still have a personality that’s supposed to evolve into a “lovable, pet-like sidekick.”

Last Chore: As you’re probably thinking, safety and privacy are major concerns — and 1X knows it. The robot is kept lightweight, so it can’t crush your toddler or dog. And when a human operator takes over, the LED ring around Neo’s ears switches from white to blue. Users can also configure Neo to blur faces in video mode and to avoid certain rooms.

Founder and CEO Bernd Børnich stresses that next year’s Neo release is just a rough draft — a way to collect real-world data to improve future models.

Prediction: Expect the first buyers to be early adopters willing to tolerate some operational kinks in exchange for being on the cutting edge. We’re sure the company is already plotting an influencer-marketing campaign… with momfluencers feeling like a perfect fit.
