Top Touring Artists Are Staying Put

An increasing number of musical artists are planting their flags and doing residencies around the world, not just in hotspots like Las Vegas and NYC.

Why It Hits: One of the big new trends in music is “gig-tripping” — taking vacations with the specific intention of seeing an artist live. A Bandsintown report found that gig-tripping skyrocketed by 32.6% between 2024 and 2025, driven by the desire to see acts like Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny. That’s music to tourism offices’ ears.

Behind The Shows: Throw a dart at a world map, and you may hit a city where a major artist has a residency, according to THR.

  • Celine Dion is starting a 16-show residency in Paris this month, with more dates to be added in 2027.

  • Sam Smith is doing a 20-show residency in San Francisco at the newly renovated Castro Theatre.

  • My Morning Jacket will also be in SF, doing seven shows at The Filmore.

  • Backstreet Boys are doing 10 shows in Dusseldorf, Germany, expanding their residency at the Sphere.

Encore: The overarching theme of these residencies is that each place means something personal to the artists. For example, Dion has French heritage, and France has consistently been one of her biggest markets, while Smith wanted to honor the venue where he connected with the city’s queer community. It’s the same motivation that led to Bad Bunny’s 31-date residency in Puerto Rico, which generated $700 million in economic impact on the island.

It’s the type of show that turns a concert into a cultural event.

The Future: Considering the pressure to sell out shows among even the biggest artists, expect more to program unique residencies that feel like can’t-miss engagements.

A24 Gets Fitted With Dior

A24 and Dior have inked a first-of-its-kind, two-year partnership to meld the worlds of film and fashion.

The Big Picture: Fashion houses have been weaving deeper relationships with the film community, with some even launching their own production companies. It’s a natural evolution for brands in both industries, where taste now spans all formats and artistic expressions. It’s a collaboration of culture.

Behind The Scenes: With A24 evolving into a lifestyle brand and Dior creative director Jonathan Anderson regularly costuming films, it was only a matter of time before a deal like this went down.

  • The partnership was announced via an Aidan Zamiri-directed short film, in which Sabrina Carpenter, Josh O’Connor, Drew Starkey, Camille Cottin, and Sophie Wilde audition to play Anderson.

  • The partnership will see Dior become the main partner at A24’s Cherry Lane Theatre in NYC, with the collaboration kicking off during a performance of Justin Vivian Bond and Zack Winokur’s Both Ends. Anderson designed the costumes, of course.

  • The partnership aims to “connect audiences to established and emerging artists through live experiences, be it on-screen or onstage, while cultivating a wider creative community,” according to Hypebeast.

Last Looks: Anderson told The Financial Times that the collaboration is about “selling the idea that a brand is real.” That’s not just marketing speak — Anderson is leaning into how brands have evolved into identity markers that say something about a person. There’s a reason people have such devotion to A24, which arguably has the best brand cachet of any Hollywood studio today.

Anderson cultivated a similar devotion at his label, LOEWE, and hopes the partnership can revitalize the love for the 79-year old Dior among a new generation of tastemakers and young people.

Coming Soon: Expect A24 to do some streetwear-like drops of Dior-designed merch for popular A24 movies. The Letterboxd community is already salivating.

49.8% of you voted No, publishers should have to opt in and be compensated in yesterday’s poll: Should AI companies be allowed to train their models on publicly available news articles without publishers’ permission?

“First and foremost, what we call ‘news’ is a business, and its business is getting us to pay attention to its format for delivering news while simultaneously making money from subscriptions and advertising fees. That is how the business of news earns income. Second, given that what we call ‘news’ is a product, anyone, including developers of so-called artificial intelligence, should compensate the publishers of the news in some way, whatever format it is consumed in. That is how it works.”

“If we have to pay for the articles, shouldn’t AI companies? More so since they’re going to try to make money off these articles.”

“It is not, as far as I am aware, illegal for me to read the NYT and disseminate any information learned from NYT articles to my friends and family. It is illegal for me to take credit for the information provided by the NYT reporter. The challenge for this judge is to establish where the line is between collecting and disseminating information and benefiting from that information. Whatever is decided will be debated and refined and is itself a field for academic discussion.”
