A24 Turns You Can See Everything Into A Blockbuster

A24’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary, You Can See Everything, surprised Hollywood by debuting to $15 million in limited release.
The Big Picture: With a few notable exceptions, docs don’t typically make much in theaters; they gain traction on streaming or VOD instead. That’s because they’ve rarely been considered must-see events that can compete with studio blockbusters. But YCSE’s success proves that the right subject, filmmakers, and marketing campaign can change that narrative.
Behind The Scenes: Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s Elizabeth Holmes doc has become one of the year’s most talked-about movies.
It made $15 million, making it the second-biggest debut for a doc after 2004’s Fahrenheit 9/11.
It achieved that despite playing on only 800 domestic screens, making it the best opening for a film on fewer than 1,000 screens since 2008’s Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert. (Talk about a deep cut.)
And just like A24’s Backrooms, the Gen Z audience showed up — 70% of ticket buyers for YCSE were under 35.
And word of mouth is going to be huge. It has a 99% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a 98% audience score. Plus, 91% of audiences told Screen Engine/Rentrak PostTrak that they “definitely recommend” it, and it has the highest Letterboxd score ever.
Final Cut: How a three-hour documentary about the founder of Theranos that wasn’t on anyone’s radar two months ago made such a splash speaks to A24’s marketing genius. A meme-making teaser, a surprise screening at the Telluride Film Festival, and some striking billboards were enough to excite audiences and generate real critical buzz. In fact, awards analysts believe it could become the first documentary ever nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
Not bad for a movie that A24 told Fielder and Oppenheim could be quietly scrapped if they couldn’t figure out a story to tell.
Coming Soon: With the movie opening wider this weekend, it could have a real shot at becoming the No. 1 movie at the box office.
