AI Programs A Whisper Network

“Can you talk a little louder please?” // Illustration by Kate Walker
As AI adoption in the workplace continues to grow, an increasing number of in-office employees are choosing to interact with the tech using their voices.
Why It Trends: Talking will always be easier than typing, so many workers are finding that dictating commands to AI boosts both productivity and critical thinking. The problem is that offices are now filled with employees conversing out loud with chatbots, reshaping workplace culture across countless companies.
Between The Prompts: One VC told The WSJ that visiting AI startups today is “like showing up at a high-end call center — except everyone is chatting with AI.”
Workers are increasingly turning to AI dictation apps like Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice, Willow, TalkTastic, Typeless, and Superwhisper to connect with Claude or ChatGPT using their voices.
These apps are now powerful enough to edit a person’s voice in real time, allowing commands to come through with cleaner grammar and improved tone.
Workers rely on these tools so heavily that they’re even physically optimizing their setups, using gaming headsets, gooseneck microphones, and programmable foot pedals to activate dictation apps.
But there’s still a very human element workers are aware of: being too loud. Many are actively trying to whisper to AI, so they don’t disrupt the people around them.
Last Command: But it’s not just employees at AI companies embracing the talking trend. The WSJ reports that workers at companies as varied as credit-card startup Ramp and payroll provider Gusto are now regularly speaking out loud to AI throughout the workday. LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman uses voice AI so frequently for work that he describes himself as “voicepilled” — not exactly surprising from the man who once interviewed his own digital double.
The Future: Expect offices to start introducing “quiet AI rooms,” where employees won’t be allowed to talk to chatbots out loud. It’s basically high-school study hall all over again.
