Amazon Wants To Be Walmart

Amazon is looking to open a big-box retail store in the suburbs of Chicago that will be both a shoppable store and an e-commerce fulfillment center.

Why It Sells: After pulling back a few years ago, Amazon seems determined to make a real go at physical retail. If it can gain a foothold in the space, Amazon could transform the typical grocery run into a battle over who has the best technology — a space Walmart has invested heavily in, but one that Target seems unequipped to compete in.

Between The Shelves: Soon, you may be going on an Amazon run, per The Information.

  • Amazon is filing paperwork to build a 225,000-square-foot retail store in Orland Park, Illinois, pending approval by the local government.

  • Customers would be able to shop for a variety of products, similar to a Target, Walmart, or Costco.

  • The location could potentially include dining options, so expect a Whole Foods integration.

  • The store would double as an online fulfillment center, with dedicated space for delivery drivers to pick up packages.

Final Receipt: Amazon said the proposed store is a “new concept” the company is exploring, building on several other brick-and-mortar initiatives already in the works. That includes a new Whole Foods store that will let people shop for products that aren’t on the shelves. It’s clear Amazon wants to literally think outside the box.

Next Order: Considering that Amazon also has a big hand in entertainment, integrating Prime Video or Amazon Music into these stores could give them an edge over established competitors.
