Apple Plans To Embed AI Siri Into Devices

Apple announced that it’s transforming Siri into the company’s first AI-powered chatbot, which will be released on nearly every Apple device later this year.

Why It Hits: It’s no secret that Apple has fallen behind in the AI wars, watching as nearly every competitor has leapfrogged it in innovation. But Apple’s plans for a fully updated Siri, integrated across its device ecosystem, could be the magic bullet that not only puts it in the same conversation as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Meta AI, but also makes it readily available to billions of customers worldwide.

Behind The Code: The new Siri — codenamed “Campos” — will replace the old Siri and reshape the iOS experience on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

  • Users will be able to interact with AI Siri via both voice and text starting with iOS 27 and iPadOS (codenamed “Rave”) and macOS 27 (codenamed “Fizz”).

  • Users will be able to search the web, create content, generate images, summarize info, analyze files, and leverage personal data to complete tasks (but, sticking to Apple’s privacy-focused reputation, its memory of past interactions will be short).

  • Since it’s embedded into Apple devices, it can do things like “control device features and settings, allowing it to make phone calls, set timers, and launch the camera,” per Bloomberg.

  • It will also be integrated into Apple’s core apps, letting users ask Siri to compose an email in Mail to a contact about calendar plans or search for an image in Photos based on specific editing changes.

Final Prompt: Users will be able to interact with AI Siri via both voice and text starting with iOS 27 and iPadOS (codenamed “Rave”) and macOS 27 (codenamed “Fizz”), all set to launch in September. The company plans to reveal more in June during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference.

There will surely be questions about Google’s role in all of this — Apple is paying the competitor a billion dollars annually to access Gemini, which is the foundation of the new Siri. Bloomberg reports that Apple is designing Siri in such a way that the underlying model can be switched out over time… potentially buying Apple enough time to replace Gemini with its own when ready.

The Future: With renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive building a device for OpenAI, 2027 could be the ultimate showdown for how the general population accesses AI — via an Ive-designed screen-less device or the Ive-designed iPhone already in their pocket.
