Happy Friday, Future Party. Throughout its 61-year history, Nutella may be the top “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” product. It’s only ever been available in the classic hazelnut chocolate spread. But in what could shatter snack aficionados worldwide, Nutella manufacturer Ferrero announced that it’s introducing a second flavor — Nutella Peanut. Ferrero hasn’t been in any rush to roll out the product, taking five years to develop it. If only some Silicon Valley companies could learn a similar lesson.

WhatsApp And OffBall Put Pro Athletes And Fans In The Group Chat

Competition for the conversation // Illustration by Kait Cunniff with DALL-E

This month, WhatsApp and sports-content publication OffBall’s “The Chat” feature has hosted conversations on some of the biggest moments in sports with some of the biggest names in sports.

The Big Play: So much of the culture of watching sports is engaging with expert commentary and interacting with like-minded fans. The Chat, which launched in February, was designed with both of those hallmarks in mind, which could make it an essential second-screen experience for sports fans.

Behind the Chats: WhatsApp and Offball have recruited some top players for The Chat.

  • Catch up: The Chat hosts group chats between athletes, celebrities, and creators, where about 1,000 people are given the chance to watch the chat and provide reactions via emojis and memes.

  • Earlier this month, LeBron James took over The Chat to provide insights during the NFL Draft, which featured guests like LeBron’s business partner, Maverick Carter, and Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud.

  • Next up on The Chat, Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler will provide commentary during the UEFA Champions League final between Paris St. Germain F.C. (PSG) and Inter Milan on May 31st.

  • He’ll be joined by Corteiz designer Clint Ogbenna and YouTuber and TV host Harry Pinero.

Final Score: OffBall says its WhatsApp channel currently has 48,000 subscribers — giving the company a deep bench of fans to rotate into each group Chat. This constant shuffle keeps the experience feeling like a lottery, with no two Chats ever having the same mix of people. It’s that feeling of not being sure what other like-minded people are experiencing the Chat with you — maybe some people you’ve interacted with, maybe some new faces — that can help build a unique type of community.

Prediction: Considering that so much of social media is moving to more private chat groups, expect more publications to link up with social platforms to host their own message-focused events to get people talking.

Robots Take Over Your Delivery

Courtesy of RIVR

Swiss robotics company RIVR is partnering with delivery platform Veho to test a fleet of robots that can deliver packages right to your door in Austin, Texas.

Why It Rolls: While several startups are racing to make a humanoid robot, some of the biggest innovations in robotics are happening with single-task-focused autonomous machines. You soon won’t be able to turn your head without seeing a robot being beta-tested on a specific function in the wild.

Between the Drop-Offs: Forget last-mile delivery… true shipping innovation is happening in the last 100 feet.

  • RIVR is testing one robot to start, which will work alongside a human driver, so they can deliver more parcels simultaneously.

  • The robot will drop off an order according to the customer’s instructions and send a photo of the delivery via the Veho app.

  • They’ll also collect data on how to navigate uneven sidewalks, stairs, porches, and other urban and rural terrain.

  • RIVR and Veho aim to have 100 of these delivery bots out in the wild by 2026.

Last Mile: Building a robot that can traverse the unpredictable terrain of residential delivery could supercharge delivery times and save humans the headache of finding their front door — something nearly every delivery driver complains about when needing to hit airtight quotas. Since Veho handles orders from retailers like Lululemon and Macy’s, keeping those customers happy could be a bellwether for whether human drivers get more help from robots.

Prediction: As delivery robots become more practical, expect Amazon to follow suit with its own rollout — especially if early results show they help drivers move faster and keep customers happy.

62.7% of you voted No in yesterday’s poll: Do you usually wear makeup?

“Makeup is bad for my skin, wallet, and the environment. Pass.”

“I’m a stay-at-home mother and don’t feel the need for makeup when I’m hauling the kids to the gym and errands after. That being said, I have started investing more in skincare, so my complexion looks better without makeup. I also wear makeup anytime I’m going out for something other than groceries or home improvement items.”

“I work in crisis PR, so I never know which day I may have to go on television. Additionally, wearing makeup is just part of keeping a neat, professional, presentable appearance in the modern-day workplace as a woman. People who consistently show up without makeup but then do a full face at parties come across as really fake and like they just don’t really care.”
