Happy Friday, Future Party. Yesterday, legendary Italian designer Giorgio Armani passed away at 91. For decades atop his namesake brand (which he was still leading as of yesterday), Armani revolutionized the suit for both men and women, transforming it into the ultimate power uniform across Hollywood, Madison Avenue, and runways worldwide. The fashion world has lost a giant.

Garage Beer Cracks Open A $200 Million Valuation

Courtesy of Garage Beer

Garage Beer, the beer brand backed and fronted by NFL stars Travis and Jason Kelce, has scored a $200 million valuation in its first funding round.

The Big Gulp: Beer has been losing its market buzz in recent years as Gen Z and millennials focus more on health and wellness. And when they do drink, they’re reaching instead for trendier options like canned cocktails and hard seltzers. Brands that can bubble to the top of mind with these consumers are becoming a hot commodity.

Behind The Cans: The Kelce brothers have the Midas touch.

  • Garage Beer has received an undisclosed amount of funding from Durational Capital Management, which will be used for marketing and expanding the brand’s footprint.

  • As part of the deal, Bill Hacket, the former head of beer at Constellation Brands (Modelo, Corona), is joining the board of directors.

  • Garage Beer is on the up and up, with revenue expected to hit close to $70 million this year, which is a big step up from $20 million last year.

Last Sip: Garage Beer has three things going for it that have made the brand a formidable player: 1) the Kelce brothers, who are hands-on with every aspect of the business, 2) strong social media engagement, including a commitment to respond to every message), and 3) its flagship light beer, which aligns perfectly with current beverage trends (Michelob Ultra is a bestseller right now). It’s a similar playbook to Tom Holland’s non-alcoholic Beero, which targets the growing sober and sober-curious market.

Next Round: While IPAs were the top beer trend of the 2010s, expect breweries and brands to now double down on crafting the tastiest versions of the lightest beers possible in an effort to juice demand.

Can You Be Retired From Driving?

Parked for life // Image by Kait Cunniff with DALL-E

GM has filed a patent for new technology that can determine when someone is no longer fit to drive.

Why It Hits: America’s car-centric culture makes it difficult to take away the keys when it’s time for someone to stop being behind the wheel. A tech that acts as a starting point for that conversation could make the choice a lot less painful for people.

Behind The Wheel: Unfortunately, no one is meant to be driving for their entire lives… so GM wants to introduce a “driver retirement score.”

  • The system collects data from both the driver and the vehicle, tracking reaction time on the road, compliance with traffic signs, and signs of fatigue. It can even measure how often they’re honked at.

  • It then tracks “whether driving improves or deteriorates over time,” according to Axios.

  • A calculated score and report card with recommendations is sent to the driver — and can also be shared with a designated family member (often the one who ends up taking the keys away).

The Future: While GM’s tech is still in the patent phase (meaning it’s a long way from being commercialized), there are plenty of potential use cases for the system beyond scoring the elderly — from pinpointing consistently reckless or inebriated drivers after repeat offenses, to giving everyday drivers reports on how to improve behind the wheel, to even keeping parents informed on the driving habits of newly-licensed teens.

Of course, a tech like this raises several privacy and freedom concerns and would likely require an opt-in component. The last time in-car sensors were used to track driving habits, the insurance industry leveraged them — and drivers were really not happy about it.

Prediction: If the tech is ever implemented across car companies, expect rideshare services to launch aggressive marketing campaigns geared toward seniors who’ve just lost their ability to drive.
