Disney Readies “Infinity Vision”

Disney officially announced its new premium large-format film experience, “Infinity Vision,” in the first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday.
The Big Picture: PLF screenings are big revenue drivers for blockbusters — IMAX showtimes accounted for nearly a fifth of The Odyssey’s $264.1 million global box office opening. Disney doesn’t have any IMAX screens for Avengers because of the release of Dune: Part 3, so the Mouse House is hoping its own format can deliver a similar box office boost.
Behind The Scenes: This December, moviegoers may find themselves asking: “Is this sort of like IMAX?”
Disney describes the Infinity Vision experience as featuring “bigger, brighter, and more immersive screens.”
But it’s not really a whole new format — it’s a new certification that the studio says meets its “rigorous technical standards.”
These are existing PLF screens, including Cinemark XD, Regal’s RX, and AMC PRIME. Disney says hundreds of screens have already been certified.
There’s no word yet on whether Infinity Vision screenings will cost more than the usual uncertified XD, RX, or PRIME showings.
Closing Credits: Disney and Marvel have a lot riding on the success of Avengers: Doomsday, and they really wanted IMAX screens to maximize its box office potential. But Denis Villeneuve, IMAX’s favorite son after Christopher Nolan, got first dibs. Both Doomsday and Dune open on the same day, inspiring some prognosticators to watch for a Barbenheimer-style effect.
Dunesday is already floating around… and moviegoers should probably start preparing for very numb butts after a December double feature.
Coming Soon: While an Avengers vs. Dune showdown doesn’t have the same built-in irony as Barbie vs. Oppenheimer, comparisons between IMAX and Infinity Vision may rule the headlines that weekend.
