Does Your Job Suffer From AI “Workslop?”

A new survey published in the Harvard Business Review found employees are increasingly dealing with “low-quality, AI-generated content” that’s making their jobs more difficult.
The Big Picture: Optimized productivity is the holy grail of the business world, and AI is being evangelized as the ultimate productivity booster. But in practice, it’s doing the opposite, which could kneecap companies’ bottom lines as everyone transitions to the tech.
Behind The Code: Are you a victim of “workslop?”
According to Stanford researchers and leadership coaching platform BetterUp, workslop “appears polished but lacks real substance.”
Of the 1,150 US “desk workers” surveyed, 40% said they had encountered workslop in the past month, and 18% have admitted to sending it to colleagues.
On average, workers spent nearly two hours trying to make sense of the lazily generated emails, memos, and reports.
Workers in tech, healthcare, and professional services, such as consulting, reported the highest percentages of workslop.
The Future: The researchers estimated that each workslop situation costs about $186 per month in wasted labor — which can add up to millions of dollars a year for large, AI-driven corporations. But the impact isn’t just financial. Employees reported feeling “annoyed,” “confused,” and even “offended” when sent low-quality content, which in turn made them see the senders as “less creative, capable, and reliable.”
And that can generate some seriously bad vibes inside a company.
Projection: Some companies may implement systems that review AI-generated content to ensure it accurately reflects the quality of the employees they hired.
