ETH Zurich Develops An Electronic Ski-Jumping Coach

Scientists from ETH Zurich, a university in Switzerland, have developed a wearable device that can coach Olympic ski jumpers while they’re in motion.
Why It Hits: We’re entering the age of tech-enabled sporting — from Nike introducing exoskeleton footwear to AI companies partnering with F1 teams. These cutting-edge devices and systems may be key to taking athletes to the next level of performance.
Between The Wires: Olympic skiers are getting an onboard computer.
The device — which includes sensors in their ski boots and specialized goggles — “tells jumpers in real time how to adjust their bodies during takeoff and flight for maximum distance,” per The NYT.
It does this by blinking red or green lights in the periphery of a skier’s vision, signaling whether adjustments are needed before, during, or after takeoff.
Coaches also receive a live feed of these signals, allowing them to better diagnose stance, pressure, or weight distribution issues in real time.
The device is already being tested with Switzerland’s “B” team, and “preliminary results indicate that it improves performance,” per Dr. Christoph Leitner, a professor of electrical engineering at ETH Zurich and researcher at Swiss Ski who led the project.
Last Run: Considering that ski jumpers travel 60 mph down a 378-foot slope before launching hundreds of feet — all in about 15 seconds — any tech that helps them make adjustments in real time is a game changer. Dr. Leitner says the device is designed to help athletes perfect “all the positioning, the center of mass, everything [that] must be stable when you arrive [at the launch point] to optimize your performance and the length of the jump.”
Geez, no pressure. No wonder some Olympians have (illegally) toyed with adding stitching to the crotch of their suits or even injecting penis-enlargement drugs to improve their lift.
Next Games: With the device set to train skiers for the 2030 Winter Olympics, all eyes may be on the Swiss team — not only to see if they medal, but whether they break any records.
