New week, new you, Future Party — especially if you’re one of the wild ones in LA about to shave your head for an early screening of Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming film, Bugonia. Focus Features is hosting the event at the Culver Theater tonight, but entry requires either already being bald or agreeing to have a barber buzz your head on-site — just like lead actress Emma Stone. Studios are really going all-in on the stunt screenings this year.

Apple Wins F1

Courtesy of Apple

Apple has claimed victory over ESPN in securing US broadcast rights for Formula 1 with a blockbuster $750 million deal.

The Big Picture: It was almost inevitable that Apple would clinch F1 after the success of its Brad Pitt–starring sports epic F1, which grossed $629 million worldwide. In testing the film, the company found that while most viewers hadn’t followed the sport beforehand, many became interested after seeing it. You don’t get better marketing than that.

Behind The Races: For the first time, streaming has taken the F1 podium.

  • Beginning with the 2026 season, Apple will pay between $140 million and $150 million annually for five years — a big upgrade from ESPN’s previous three-year deal worth $85 million per year. ESPN ultimately declined to match Apple’s offer.

  • The deal includes all Formula 1 practice sessions, qualifying rounds, Sprint events, and Grand Prix races available free to all US subscribers. It also bundles F1’s standalone F1 TV Premium service at no additional cost.

  • Apple plans a major promotional push to boost awareness of the sport, including offering select races for free without a subscription, “amplification” across all Apple services (Maps, Music, etc.), and a dedicated F1 widget for iOS devices.

Last Lap: Beyond F1’s status as a premium cultural tastemaker, the deal also positions Apple to expand its global sports ambitions — the company already holds rights to Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball.

With F1 averaging 1.38 million viewers per race across ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 this season, Apple sees plenty of room for growth.

Next Race: Expect Apple to integrate some of the innovative filming techniques used in the movie F1 into its live race coverage, bringing viewers closer to the action… and driving new subscribers to Apple TV.

Niantic’s AR Alien Dog Is Your Friendly Neighborhood Tour Guide

Courtesy of Niantic Labs

Niantic Labs — the mobile app company behind Pokémon GO — has upgraded its AR pet simulator Peridot (first released in 2022) into an AI-powered companion that can guide you, narrate your surroundings, and share interesting facts… but only if you’re wearing Snap’s Spectacles.

Why It Hits: Niantic has long been on a mission not just to gamify AR, but to transform it into a technology that connects users with the world around them. Peridot is a rare game that inspires players to not only explore their environment, but truly engage with it.

Behind The Code: Peridot Beyond poses the question: What if your dog could talk to you on a walk?

  • According to Wired, the game lets you customize Dots — small 3D digital companions that can identify what’s in your field of view and provide real-time information or walking directions via animated footprints.

  • The game update was co-developed by Niantic Spatial — a new venture within Niantic aimed at “turning geospatial data into an accessible playground for AR” — and the AI startup Hume AI.

  • Unlike earlier versions, the new Peridot isn’t playable on your phone — it’s only accessible via Snap’s AR glasses, Spectacles.

Last Stop: With Peridot, Niantic set out to recreate the feeling of exploring a new city with a local friend — an experience that can “reduce the stress of navigation but also just kind of make people feel calm,” says Alicia Berry, executive producer at Niantic Spatial. The real breakthrough, according to Hume AI founder Alan Cowen, is that Niantic has built an AI that “sees what you see.” There are a lot of use cases for that kind of cutting-edge technology.

The tradeoff? You’ll need to wear the oversized Spectacles — which, as you can imagine, will definitely make you stand out in a new town.

Next Tour: If Niantic, Hume AI, and Snap can find a way to make Dots interact across users, it could be a total game-changer for Spectacles sales.

“I think it’s a slippery slope that’s going to lead to even more issues in the long term. The ease of access is going to make people stop seeking IRL connections.”

“I’ve only used AI to help me at work and to help me figure out what to make for dinner.”

“Once, during a deep depression. It didn’t take long to realize it wasn’t as literate or intelligent as I was, so I talked to a real person instead.”

“Dear God, no. I have my animals to talk to when I need an actual conversation. 😉
