Gen Z Is Making A Career Out Of Assisting Billionaires

The new career path? // Illustration by Kate Walker

Gen Z is ditching the corporate ladder in order to work for the biggest corporate titans on Earth… as personal support staff.

Why It Hits: Good white-collar jobs are increasingly difficult (impossible, based on the vibes out there) to find right now as AI-powered automation transforms companies into leaner, meaner operations. Meanwhile, there are now more than 3,000 billionaires on Earth (up from 322 in 2000), and they would very much like to hire armies of people to make their lives easier and manage their sprawling empires.

Between The Jobs: Private staffing — working personally for a rich individual or family — is becoming the hottest job on the market, per Insider.

  • Roles include nannies, executive assistants, personal assistants, house managers, butlers, security staff, chauffeurs, personal chefs, and much more.

  • Many support roles are paying $150,000 to $250,000 — much more than normal entry or mid-level white collar jobs. No wonder people with graduate degrees are applying.

  • They also come with perks like a 401(k), PTO, chef-cooked meals, a provided wardrobe, and access to a jet-setting or yacht-faring lifestyle.

  • But the perks come with compromise. Many times, staff are expected to always be available to the “principal” and will likely have to spend holidays with their bosses rather than their own families.

The Future: A survey this year from Deloitte points to why these roles have become so popular among young people. Only 6% of Gen Zers want to reach a leadership position in their careers, sometimes even opting to turn down promotions to management — what’s called “conscious unbossing” for those who are chronically online. Yet an Empower survey found that the same cohort believes they need a salary of $600,000 to be financially successful.

In other words, something’s not adding up… unless cosplaying Downton Abbey was your intended career trajectory.

Next Role: While private-staffing recruitment agencies have been around for decades, expect dedicated schools that teach private-staffing skills to pop up, acting as an alternative to the typical college track.
