Ireland Makes Its Monthly Basic Income For Artists Permanent

Ireland is preparing to make its experimental basic income for artists — roughly $1,500/month — permanent in the country.
The Big Bet: Since COVID, several countries have tested universal basic income programs, but none have committed to them long-term. If Ireland follows through, it could become a global trendsetter — and maybe the next big destination for working artists.
Behind The Payments: After a three-year pilot of its Basic Income Scheme for the Arts — which paid a random sampling of artists €325 (about $370) per week — Ireland has extended the program’s expiration to the end of February, giving it time to potentially cement it into law.
Insider reports that the Irish government has included a line item for “a successor to the pilot Basic Income Scheme for the Arts to begin next year” in its 2026 budget.
That comes on the heels of a report from Ireland’s Ministry of Arts and Culture, which found that participants experienced significantly lower stress levels, a greater willingness to take creative risks, and more confidence in charting long-term careers — all of which led to better work.
Check Balance: By locking in the program, Ireland is rethinking not just how it supports its citizens, but also how it subsidizes one of the country’s key exports of influence. Ireland has a long history of critically acclaimed literature and poetry, but its output in film, TV, and fine art has recently exploded in popularity. That not only puts Ireland on the map — it also fuels foreign investment and tourism.
In a way, the program represents Ireland reinvesting those cultural dividends directly into the people creating them.
Future Profit: As AI threatens to upend creative industries, Ireland’s basic income model could become a blueprint for protecting the livelihoods of human artists who still need to pay their bills while they build a career.
