Jeff Bezos Founds AI Startup Project Prometheus

Jeff Bezos has launched an AI startup called Project Prometheus that aims to optimize engineering and manufacturing.

The Big Picture: Project Prometheus joins big players like Nvidia and startups like Periodic Labs in hoping to build AI-powered robots that can autonomously build, research, and conduct experiments across a variety of critical fields. Whoever cracks it could be… well… the Amazon of robotics.

Behind The Startup: Bezos has apparently tired of spending all his days on his mega-yacht — he wants in on the AI action.

  • The Amazon founder has taken on the role of co-CEO of Project Prometheus, alongside now-former Foresite Labs CEO Vik Bajaj, a renowned physicist and chemist.

  • The startup is launching out of stealth with a whopping $6.2 billion in funding (most of it from Bezos himself) and a headcount of nearly 100 employees.

  • The company will focus on utilizing AI to make computers, spaceships, and cars — and may also explore physical sciences and drug development.

Final Pitch: The big issue facing every AI company is a continual lack of capital… which is hilarious when you consider we’re talking about the biggest companies in the world. But it’s also the challenge that brought Bezos — one of the richest people on the planet — to the table. The man not only has quite the bank account at his disposal, but the track record to raise a nearly infinite amount of cash to leapfrog competitors.

By taking on the co-CEO role, Bezos is signaling to investors that he’s in it for the long haul.

Look Out: We wouldn’t be surprised if Bezos’ master plan is for AI-powered robots to start building Blue Origin rockets and satellites at scale.
