Markiplier Becomes GoPro’s Largest Shareholder

Popular creator-turned-filmmaker Markiplier (real name Mark Fischbach) has become the largest single shareholder in camera company GoPro.
The Big Picture: There have been plenty of successful examples of creators launching product-focused businesses over the past handful of years… but Markiplier might be the first to take a major position in an existing public company with the hopes of supercharging both its reach and sales.
Behind The Investment: According to Bloomberg, Fischbach may not be a professional investor, but he has loads of conviction (and money).
Fischbach has long been a big user of GoPro cameras, but he was shocked to learn the company was worth only $110 million after its stock lost 90% of its value over the past five years and the company recently began exploring a sale.
So, he started building up a portfolio that now accounts for an 8.5% stake in the company — about $9.35 million.
Additionally, GoPro has struck a sponsorship deal with the creator, which will likely see him become the face of the company’s next ad campaign.
Fischbach said of the position: “I saw the stock and where it was, and I was like, that seems undervalued. It’s just something I’ve been cooking in the background; I want the company to succeed.”
Closing Thoughts: It’s one thing to be a fan, and another to feel compelled to spend over $9 million to prop up a potentially sinking ship. The deciding factor for Markiplier was finding out about the company’s first-ever cinema camera with interchangeable lenses — the Mission 1 Pro ILS.
Markiplier, who self-funded and distributed his debut feature, Iron Lung, to a whopping $51 million at the box office, has made promoting DIY filmmaking his hill to die on. He sees GoPro’s new camera as a major step forward for filmmaking accessibility, so the tie-up between the parties may be a match made in heaven.
The Future: Given enough attention, Markiplier might just be able to turn around GoPro’s stock price and fuel a comeback.
