Nike’s ACG Creates A Portable Soccer Field

Nike’s ACG (All Conditions Gear) brand has created a soccer stadium that sets up as easily as pitching a tent and fits in the back of a van.
Why It Scores: Building anything takes complicated paperwork, cutting through red tape, and manpower. Nike’s new invention aims to give people the opportunity not just to play a pick-up game whenever they want, but also the infrastructure to turn it into an event.
Between The Goals: The “All Conditions Cup System” was made by ACG and the creative agency Amsterdam Berlin.
It’s made up of 1,677 ultra-lightweight aluminum components that snap together to form two goals, neon-strap field lines, 80 chairs, seven lights, and even whistles.
Staying true to the all-conditions name, the pieces are designed for different climates and terrain so they can be “installed on sand, snow, rocky ground, or other difficult surfaces,” per Amsterdam Berlin founder and creative director Moritz Grub.
All the pieces can be stored in weather-resistant ripstop bags and carried on foot, on a sled, or in the back of a van, per Fast Company.
The system was designed to be “low-to-no impact,” so it doesn’t leave any physical traces when removed… other than cleat markings from the players.
Last Kick: While ACG and Amsterdam Berlin don’t yet have plans to commercialize the product (it was built to promote a new apparel collection for Italian soccer club Inter Milan on a snowy mountainside), Nike has been on a tear, releasing cutting-edge products. That includes a mind-altering sneaker, inflatable jackets for Team USA, and a robotic running shoe. It’s part of Nike CEO Elliott Hill’s push to win back the sports-performance market.
To do that, store shelves are going to need all the R&D they can get.
Next Game: Nike has the chance to do the coolest thing and create makeshift soccer fields across the developing world to promote the sport and build community. Presumably an exec there has already thought of this (if not, you’re welcome).
