OpenAI Is Launching a Social App for AI-Generated Videos

OpenAI has announced a TikTok-style social app for AI-generated videos — all powered by its new Sora 2 video model.

The Big Picture: AI-video social apps are emerging as the tech becomes more advanced. Meta just launched a “Vibes” tab in its Meta AI app for AI-generated UGC videos, while Google is rolling out Veo 3 inside YouTube Shorts. Are we entering an era of AI-video slop or the start of a new entertainment format?

Behind The Scroll: If OpenAI has its way, it’ll become normal to see deepfakes of you and everyone you know — something CEO Sam Altman embraced in the Sora 2’s launch video.

  • The Sora app allows users to generate 10-second videos with sound but doesn’t allow uploads of outside media.

  • It includes a “For You”-style feed, algorithmic recommendations, and the ability to like, comment, and remix a video.

  • Users can confirm their likeness on the app to create videos of themselves.

  • Users can also make videos featuring deepfakes of anyone who has confirmed their likeness on the app — automatically making them a “co-owner” of the video.

  • Notifications alert users whenever someone generates a video of them (even if it remains in the draft folder), and they can delete it or revoke access at any time.

Final Prompt: It’s no surprise that OpenAI announced Monday that Sora 2 will require copyright holders to manually opt out of each work they don’t want used to train the LLM. The company knows the best way to encourage people to download the app and crank out content is to let them make videos in the style of existing works. OpenAI wants its Studio Ghibli trend for Sora before the law catches up.

Next Upload: With OpenAI now knocking on Hollywood’s door, expect studios to ramp up lawsuits against smaller AI-video players pulling similar stunts — turning the definition of “fair use” into an existential question for entertainment.
