Pee-Tracking Becomes A Health Trend

New devices are finding a home in toilet bowls, where they track the health of your pee.
The Big Splash: Tracking our every metric has become commonplace, with Oura Rings, Apple Watches, and Fitbits now monitoring our caloric intake and activity levels. But one of the best ways to analyze how our bodies are doing is to take a closer look at what comes out of them.

Vivoo debuted a smart sensor at CES yesterday that clips to the inside of a toilet bowl. Connected to a mobile app, the device measures your “pee’s specific gravity” to analyze your hydration (apparently, visually checking color isn’t good enough).
Withings rolled out two U-Scan devices — the Nutrio (which checks ketone levels, hydration, and urine acidity) and Calci (which checks for calcium content, a potential sign of developing kidney stones).
Kohler released a potty camera (it checks more than just your pee) called the Dekoda, which leverages AI to analyze your waste and give users a breakdown of their gut health.
Last Drip: As strange as these devices may be, analyzing pee is already a routine way doctors assess patients’ health — you can now just do it yourself and then send late-night panic messages to your doctor when something’s off.
But privacy is about to get more complicated than simply closing the bathroom door when family and friends are over. The Dekoa is supposed to be end-to-end encrypted, but that’s turned out to be a bit of a pipe dream. So, yeah, some rear ends are already floating around in the digital ether.
