Sony Plans An Eventized Rollout Of Beatles Movies

Sony Pictures is planning an unprecedented release strategy for its upcoming four-part film franchise, with each installment focusing on a different member of The Beatles.
The Big Picture: Sony film head Tom Rothman is taking a major swing with his plan to release four Beatles movies simultaneously. If it works, it could be a blockbuster hit and a major topic of cultural conversation. If it doesn’t, it could go down as one of the biggest flops in Hollywood history, with each movie carrying a rumored budget of about $100 million.
Behind The Scenes: In April 2028, Sony wants you to schedule a movie marathon.
The movie could either be released all on the same day or individually on separate weekends throughout the month.
The tickets may be offered as a package, encouraging fans to watch all four movies in cinemas instead of just one or two.
To that end, the movies will also be marketed as having no right viewing order. Instead, each movie will illuminate the others.
Final Plan: Interestingly, the movies’ box office haul will likely be reported collectively rather than separately to avoid creating competition over who’s the most popular Beatle (a narrative the studio and surviving band members don’t want to deal with). But to pull that off, the studio will need to get all theater chains to agree to withhold individual box office numbers — an undertaking that requires everyone to play along.
Essentially, releasing these movies is lowkey complex — a little like an early Beatles song.
Coming Soon: While Sony would like to tamp down competition between the Beatles members, expect box office receipts to leak and finally put an end to one of the greatest (and most misguided) debates in rock and roll — whether Paul or John was the most influential Beatle.
To that end, let Ethan Hawke settle the debate once and for all.
