TikTok Rolls Out “Local Feeds”

TikTok is rolling out a new feature that lets users see videos specifically from people in their area.
The Big Picture: Going viral is taking on some new nuances. Instead of just racking up numbers across the internet (and, ostensibly, the world), creators and brands can now target their neighborhood — opening up opportunities for more IRL engagement.
Behind The Posts: Forget the community bulletin board. It’s now the era of the TikTok “Local Feed.”
American users can find the feed by navigating to a new tab labeled “Local.”
The feed will contain “content related to nearby travel, events, restaurants, and shopping, as well as posts from local creators,” per a TikTok blog post.
It will also take into account posts about certain topics and recent uploads, according to Tubefilter — suggesting that even local feeds will receive algorithmic personalization.
The new tab won’t be visible to users under 18, those with a private account, or those whose accounts are set to be visible only to friends or themselves.
Last Post: TikTok’s new American offshoot, the USDSJV, was able to roll out the feature because it asks users to share their precise location, rather than just an approximate one (like the TikTok the rest of the world uses). That may irk privacy proponents who believe social media already has too much information about us… but if you’re still using TikTok, privacy may not be your biggest concern as is. Users can, however, always opt out of precise location tracking.
Next Scroll: TikTok already made a major marketing push about its importance to small businesses while lobbying to avoid a shutdown in the US. But this new feature could be key to doubling down on that promise.
