Twitter Resurrects Under A Former Twitter Lawyer

A former Twitter lawyer has revived Twitter — name, branding, and all — as Twitter.now.
Why It Hits: No matter what you think of the Elon Musk-owned X, a lot of people still miss the heyday of Twitter, when it truly did feel like the internet’s town hall. One of those people just happens to have been a big part of the company a decade ago. Now, he wants to create a space that feels a little like the old platform, but with updates that address the toxic issues it had even back in the day.
Behind The Scenes: Stephen Coates — Twitter’s former head counsel for trademarks, domain names, and marketing — created Operation Bluebird to re-hatch Twitter.
Twitter.now began early testing on Thursday as a web app with only a few hundred users. People can pay $20 to join early and score a preferred Twitter handle.
Coates is in a legal gray area when it comes to taking the name. While X sued Coates over his use of it, a district judge has mostly sided with his argument that the company abandoned its trademarks for Twitter, “tweet,” and its blue bird logo after changing its name.
But because the judge has yet to write his decision, X’s injunction against the company still stands, making Twitter.now unavailable on the App Store and Google Play Store.
Last Post: The platform works like the old one, but with one key caveat — it lets users change their algorithm to “decide how much potentially false or harmful material reaches their feeds,” per Insider. That’s because Coates’ philosophy is “freedom of speech and not freedom of reach” — the company uses an AI system to assess posts, verify claims, provide sources and context, and assign a trust score to content. Users will soon be able to limit what they see by setting the minimum trust score a post needs to appear in their feed.
Prediction: While Twitter.now is jumping into the fray with several X alternatives, its content-moderation tool may help it stand out… if it works as intended.
