Ticket Reselling For Profit Is Now Illegal In The UK

Celebrating paying face value

The UK is set to pass a measure that would ban reselling tickets for a profit after lobbying from some of the country’s top acts.

The Big Picture: Ticket scalping has become a scourge of the live-music scene as the normal price of tickets has exceeded affordability levels. The perfect storm of bot-powered bulk buying and increased demand to see top artists live has led to a lot of angry fans… and a few government investigations. The UK is seemingly trying to nip this problem in the bud.

Behind The Ban: The UK has a message for ticket scalpers: “Go to the concert or lose money.”

  • The plan, which is expected to be revealed today by lawmakers, would tackle ticket reselling across music, live theater, comedy, and sports events.

  • Ticket holders will still be able to sell their tickets, but the price will be capped at the ticket’s original cost.

  • The UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport is trying to take things a step further, encouraging resale tickets to be priced at an average of $48 cheaper than their listing. That would save fans roughly $137 million annually.

Final Sale: The legislation comes on the heels of top UK acts like Dua Lipa, Coldplay, The Cure, and Radiohead sending an open letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer to fulfill his promise of ending scalping. And with AI set to put ticket buying and reselling into overdrive, time seemed especially of the essence.

It looks like the bands and government officials both fear the same thing: irate fans.

Next Gig: Keep your eye out for a Robin Hood of the music scene who gobbles up tickets en masse for the sole purpose of selling them to fans at a lower price. Crazier things have happened.
