Happy Wednesday, Future Party. Another day, another debilitating cloud outage. This time, it was Cloudflare that went dark, bringing down ChatGPT, X, Spotify, and many others for a few hours yesterday. Ironically, even DownDetector was down. The issue was reportedly caused by a configuration file that got too big and crashed the system. We’re not totally sure what that means, but we bet it’s a lot like when your phone gets stuck trying to send that seven-minute concert video to your friend. Too big to fail definitely doesn’t apply to file sizes.

Doctors Are Prescribing Parties

Doctors around the world are turning to “social prescribing” to treat two growing ills — mental health and loneliness.

Why It Heals: While mental-health issues and chronic loneliness have become more socially accepted as legitimate concerns over the past decade, they’ve been treated mostly with individualized therapy and medication. Both are critical to care, but they miss a necessary ingredient in today’s fractured and isolated world — the healing effect of community.

Behind The Prescriptions: Sometimes, a good book club or running club is exactly what the doctor ordered, according to Insider.

  • Social prescribing is when a doctor refers a patient to a specific community service or social activity. They often partner with organizations, such as Art Pharmacy, that evaluate and recommend which activities best suit the patient.

  • The movement started in the UK, where 1.3 million people now receive social prescriptions. The country has 3,000 “link workers,” who function like social workers by connecting people with groups that match their availability and comfort levels.

  • It’s now popping up in the US and Canada, with universities like Stanford University and organizations like Social Prescribing USA expanding the practice. Still, participating programs are mostly on the coasts for now.

  • According to studies out of the UK and Canada, investment in social prescription programs yielded significant returns. And the World Health Organization found positive outcomes from the programs in limited studies.

Last Dose: As social media, AI, and chronic overworking isolate people in digital bubbles, the need for socialization feels more necessary than ever. Former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared loneliness a health epidemic, and there’s currently a 74% deficit in needed mental-health experts.

In other words, we’re in a bit of a crisis… and everyone having a few more friends may be one of the key ways to turn things around.

Next Refill: Considering Gen Z’s growing log-off movement, the hottest new cultural trend may be having a calendar filled with community-minded activities. We could all benefit from being a part of some club.

The UK Is About To Ban For-Profit Scalpers

Celebrating paying face value

The UK is set to pass a measure that would ban reselling tickets for a profit after lobbying from some of the country’s top acts.

The Big Picture: Ticket scalping has become a scourge of the live-music scene as the normal price of tickets has exceeded affordability levels. The perfect storm of bot-powered bulk buying and increased demand to see top artists live has led to a lot of angry fans… and a few government investigations. The UK is seemingly trying to nip this problem in the bud.

Behind The Ban: The UK has a message for ticket scalpers: “Go to the concert or lose money.”

  • The plan, which is expected to be revealed today by lawmakers, would tackle ticket reselling across music, live theater, comedy, and sports events.

  • Ticket holders will still be able to sell their tickets, but the price will be capped at the ticket’s original cost.

  • The UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport is trying to take things a step further, encouraging resale tickets to be priced at an average of $48 cheaper than their listing. That would save fans roughly $137 million annually.

Final Sale: The legislation comes on the heels of top UK acts like Dua Lipa, Coldplay, The Cure, and Radiohead sending an open letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer to fulfill his promise of ending scalping. And with AI set to put ticket buying and reselling into overdrive, time seemed especially of the essence.

It looks like the bands and government officials both fear the same thing: irate fans.

Next Gig: Keep your eye out for a Robin Hood of the music scene who gobbles up tickets en masse for the sole purpose of selling them to fans at a lower price. Crazier things have happened.
